The Blackamoor*****

The Blackamoor*****

As recorded by Derrick Gardner & The Jazz Prophets +2 on the Owl Studios release “Echoes of Ethnicity” (OWL00129). This is a challenging, uptempo composition in G minor arranged with intricate countermelodic figures and chord progressions that are nice to solo over. The solo sections for the Alto Saxophone and Trombone are complete with background figures. The piano solo is unaccompanied and leads into a very intricate ensemble soli. The arrangement ends by reharmonizing the original theme in an added section of music outside of the AABA form that modulates to a slower tempo.

Autumn In New York***

(Vernon Duke) As recorded by Derrick Gardner & The Jazz Prophets +2 on the Owl Studios release “Echoes of Ethnicity” (OWL00129), this arrangement is a trumpet feature with bits of the melody played by the Alto Saxophone and Trombone. It also features the verse of this popular standard as a horn section chorale. The arrangement finishes with a nice ensemble soli and a Bass solo during the CODA.

As recorded by Derrick Gardner & The Jazz Prophets +2 on the Owl Studios release “Echoes of Ethnicity” (OWL00129). This is a G minor blues with varying time signatures. This 13-measure form is eight measures 6/4, four measures 4/4 and the final measure 6/4 with the Baritone Saxophone featured in the introduction and in the ending. Soloists are Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet and Drums. This arrangement is complete with background figures for the Trumpet and Baritone Saxophone solo sections, ensemble interlude and finishes with an exciting ensemble shout section that features the drums in a trading manner over the form.

The Melting Pot

The Melting Pot***

(Freddie Hubbard) As recorded by Derrick Gardner & The Jazz Prophets +2 on the Owl Studios release “Echoes of Ethnicity” (OWL00129), this is an arrangement on one of Freddie Hubbard’s more obscure compositions but one of my personal favorites. The solo sections for Trumpet, Trombone and Tenor Saxophone are complete with background figures. Piano solo is unaccompanied and leads into a very rhythmic ensemble shout section to end the arrangement.

Blues For Sweets

Blues For Sweets**

This composition is written for legendary trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison. The melody is based off a chromatic improvisatory idea that was one of his signature phrases. The solo sections for Trumpet and Baritone Saxophone are complete with background figures. Piano solo is unaccompanied and leads into a “Basie-like” ensemble soli section.

4NEWK***

4NEWK***

As recorded by Derrick Gardner & The Jazz Prophets +2 on the Owl Studios release “Echoes of Ethnicity” (OWL00129), this is a hard bop tribute to tenor saxophone legend Sonny Rollins that has been twice recycled from the original tune “Four” and then from Lee Morgan’s “Haina.” The solo sections for the Tenor Sax and Trumpet are complete with background figures. The Piano solo is unaccompanied and leads into an ensemble shout that features melodic references to “Four.”

Of Infinity

Of Infinity***

(Robert Dixon) Originally recorded as a sextet arrangement by Derrick Gardner & The Jazz Prophets on the Owl Studios release “A Ride To The Other Side” (OWL00121), this Rob Dixon original is a reharmonized minor blues with deceptive chord progressions that stray away from the typical ii V7 I root movement. The melody is very modern sounding and the chord progressions will guide the soloist away from the typical ii V7 I phrasing.

United****

(Wayne Shorter) This is an arrangement of one Wayne Shorter’s many great compositions originally recorded by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. The soloists are Bass, Tenor Saxophone, Alto Saxophone and Drums with the horn solos being accompanied with background figures. The arrangement also features a “Four over Three” concept during the ensemble soli. Here the brass are playing melodic figures phased in 4/4 over saxophone background figures played in 3/4 and vise-versa.

Natural Woman**

(Carol King) As recorded by Derrick Gardner & The Jazz Prophets +2 on the Owl Studios release “Echoes of Ethnicity” (OWL00129), this is an arrangement of the Aretha Franklin hit from 1967. The chord progressions have been reharmonized and the feel of the tune departs from it’s original 12/8 gospel feel into a slow 4/4 durge-like feel. The soloists are Piano and Trumpet.
