On April 9, 2019 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC, trumpeter Derrick Gardner was awarded the prestigious Benny Golson Jazz Master Award. Maestro Gardner is the Bob Asper Professor in Jazz Performance at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada and he was the featured soloist during Howard University Jazz Ensemble Spring Concert.
