The TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival is pleased to present Steve Kirby’s Oceanic Jazz Orchestra!

Lying at the heart of Winnipeg’s jazz community since moving to the city in 2003, Steve Kirby is an ardent supporter, promoter, performer, educator and tireless champion. Steve’s own art has often taken a back seat to his mentorship roles. With the inception of his Oceanic Jazz Orchestra, that is about to change. At the 2016 TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival, Steve Kirby’s Oceanic Jazz Orchestra is performing The Longitude Project, a series of original third-stream compositions that tell the stories of The Americas from tip to tip. The Orchestra is joined by Gwen Hoebig (principal violinist of the WSO), and a bevvy of acclaimed guests – including genre-bending San Francisco bassoonist Paul Hanson (Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Wayne Shorter) and vibraphone virtuoso Joel Ross (Herbie Hancock, Stefon Harris).

Steve is the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Manitoba, editor of dig! Magazine, and the force behind many other jazz initiatives in the city, including the Izzy Asper Jazz Performances series, Jazz on Wheels, the Bridge: Music for Life program, the CanU Jazz Academy, the U of M Summer Jazz Camp, and the Wednesday Night Hang.

The Oceanic Jazz Orchestra is: Steve Kirby, Bass; Gwen Hoebig, Violin; Paul Hanson, Bassoon; Joel Ross, Vibes; Jon Gordon, Alto Sax; Artur Kivilaht, Guitar; Derrick Gardner, Trumpet; Anna-Lisa Kirby, Vocals; Kyle Cobb, Vocals; Joanna Majoko, Vocals; Shannon Kristjanson, Flute; Bronwen Garand-Sheridan, Oboe; and Judy Kehler Siebert, Keyboard.
