This video features sights and scenes from the recording session of the July 2020 Impact Jazz release “Still I Rise” by Derrick Gardner & The Big dig! Band. The footage was shot during the first week of January 2020 in Winnipeg, Manitoba at Desautels Recording Studios and visually projects scenes of the musicians, ensemble rehearsals, the music as it’s recorded in session and insight into the history and creative aesthetic of The Big dig! Band. There is also great footage of behind the scenes preparation, insightful descriptions of the music and interviews of the musicians and the leader. It is my hope that I have given to the viewer and listener a privileged insight into how this recording project came together from the first note written on the score to the ending note of the last recorded piece of music on the session.
